Periods are a natural part of life, and questions or concerns about swimming during your period are always welcome.

Can you swim on your period?

Yes! You can absolutely swim while on your period. It’s generally safe to swim while on your period. Many swimmers continue their usual training and competitions throughout their cycle.

Water pressure may temporarily reduce visible menstrual flow while you’re swimming, but it does not stop your period. The right period protection can help you feel secure and comfortable.

Make sure to take a break or reduce training when you need to. Severe pain or feeling unwell is not something you need to push through.

Choosing your period protection

Period swimwear

Specially designed swimwear uses protective layers to help manage leaks. Different products are designed for different flow levels; check the manufacturer’s guidance. It can be especially helpful if you prefer not to use an internal product.

Brands like Modibodi, Funkita, Ruby Love & Knix

Choose dark coloured swimsuits

If you are competing, check the current Swim England rules and your event’s requirements before using period swimwear in competition.

Tampons

One of the most popular options for swimming.

Tampons absorb menstrual blood internally. Choose the lowest absorbency suitable for your flow, follow the instructions, and change them at the recommended intervals (never more than eight hours).

Make sure to change it soon after swimming, as it may absorb some water, making it less effective.

Menstrual cups and discs

Cups and discs collect menstrual blood internally and can be suitable for swimming. Follow the product-specific instructions on fitting, hygiene and how long it can be worn.

These are eco-friendly and cost effective over time.

Pads and liners

Ordinary sanitary pads and liners absorb pool water, so they are not suitable for swimming. They can be useful before and after your session.

Tips for swimming comfortably

Bring spare products and a change of underwear.

Wear swimwear that feels comfortable and secure.

Drink water regularly and eat enough to support your training.

Use the toilet or changing facilities before and after swimming as needed.

Tell a trusted adult or coach privately if you need a break or support.

Change your product before and after swimming to help prevent leaks.

Some people find gentle activity helps with cramps, but everyone’s experience is different.

Build a small period pack

Keeping a discreet zipped pouch in your swim bag means you have essentials ready when you need them, a well-prepared period pack for swimmers ensures you can enjoy the water without stress.
