After the newly built Newport Swimming Pool was opened in May 1968 a proposal was made to form a swimming club. A year later on the 12th May 1969 Newport Swimming Club was up and running with aprox. 270 members joining. In the July 1969 the Shropshire County Age Group Championships were held at Newport with Newport winning 1 Gold, 1 Silver & 2 Bronzes.
1970 saw the club change it’s name to the name we have today Newport & District Armature Swimming Club, although at the time is was more than a competitive swimming club. Over the years Newport has had a water polo team, synchronised swimming group and an open water group (Alpha 84) and had swimmers take part in the high performance squad (Wrekin Warriors) too.
Today, Newport is a friendly, inclusive club, and this is reflected in our club’s motto – Three Fish One Team. We have our developing swimmers competing in the much loved Diddy League, the main squad who race successfully at high levels of competition and our Masters section who represent the club & county up to National level. Despite being one the smaller swimming clubs in the county, we punch well above our weight and consistently produce superb swimmers, along with excellent volunteers who help out both poolside and behind the scenes. We are a great team who work with great enthusiasm and along with our swimmers this combined help to make Newport a great place to swim.
