Club History

About our club

Our history

From the opening of Newport Swimming Pool in 1968 to the welcoming club we know today, our story is shaped by generations of swimmers, coaches and volunteers.

How it all began

Newport’s swimming story began with a new pool, an enthusiastic local community and a proposal to establish a club.

1968

A new swimming pool opens

Newport Swimming Pool opened in May 1968. Soon afterwards, a proposal was made to form a swimming club.

1969

Newport Swimming Club is born

On 12 May 1969, Newport Swimming Club was up and running, with approximately 270 members joining!

July 1969

Early championship success

Newport hosted the Shropshire County Age Group Championships, where the club won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

1970

A new name

The club adopted the name Newport & District Amateur Swimming Club, reflecting its growing place in the local swimming community.

Our history includes this Newport Salopian Swim Squad emblem, featuring a swimmer above three fish and the motto Nulli Secundus .

We welcome photographs, recollections and further information about this chapter of Newport swimming history.

More than a competitive swimming club

Over the years, the club’s activities have extended beyond racing in the pool. Newport has had a water polo team, a synchronised swimming group and an open-water group known as Alpha 84 . Swimmers have also taken part in the high-performance Wrekin Warriors squad.

Developing swimmers

Our youngest developing competitors have enjoyed the much-loved Diddy League.

Competitive squad

Our main squad has competed successfully at high levels of the sport.

Masters swimming

Our Masters swimmers have represented both club and county, up to national level.

Our volunteers

Dedicated volunteers make it all possible, helping both poolside and behind the scenes.

“Three Fish One Team”

Today, Newport is a friendly, inclusive swimming club. Although we are one of the smaller clubs in the county, we have a proud record of developing talented swimmers and bringing people together. Our motto reflects the enthusiasm and teamwork of everyone who contributes to club life.
